St. M & N's Youth Club

About Us

The Club
St. Mary's and St. Nicolas' youth club has been running for over 12 years. Currently we have about 10 - 20 regular members and St. M & N's and about 30 on our register. In that time literally hundreds or members have enjoyed the opportunities that we provide. We are affiliated to both St. Mary's and St. Nicolas' churches, as well as having links with many others. There is no registration fee and events are at the minimum price we can charge, we even subsidise some events.  We are always very grateful of any contributions to help us provide even more opportunities for our members. But the best way that you can help is to encourage anyone who is 10 or over to come along to an event, and see if they like it.

Some events include :-
Club Nights, every last Saturday of the month,
7.00 - 9.00 p.m. St Mary's hall
Activities and tea, St Mary's hall
3.30 - 5.30 p.m. every second Sunday (for details of the times and dates for the Bi-monthly Family Worship and Praise, see the Youth Club programme, or the magazine).

Location
St. Marys's and St. Nicolas' Youth club is based around Shoreham-by-sea, South England. Shoreham is a nice small town and with a friendly community. It has two Churches, St. Marys and St.Nicolas'. We use St. Marys hall, East Street for our meeting place, as it has good facilities and is near the church (which is handy for our bi-monthly services).

Club History
St. Nicolas' and St. Mary's Youth Group was formed in autumn 1985 for young people from the age of 11. At first there were about 20 members, but now the number stands at around 30. There is a varies social calendar, including the popular annual camp.
Being a Christian-based group, members are expected to attend church regularly. The majority worship at either St. Nicolas' or St. Mary's in Shoreham, but young people from other churches are also welcome.
The religious aspect of the group is a focal point, and at the monthly dicussion and tea, members and leaders get together in groups to discuss various aspects of their beliefs.
There used to be a drama section of the club, called CYPHERS, which performed a variety of sketches, plays and musicals, based on religious themes.
The group has recently changed it name from MANYC (Mary's And Nicolas' Youth Club) to St. M & N's Youth Club. This was done at the 1998 camp.

The Churches
There are many churches in Shoreham, the two main ones being St. Mary's and St. Nicolas'. St. Marys dates from about 1100 AD and was build by the Normans. The Adur River was slowly silting up at Old Shoreham which made it necessary to move the main port and centre of population southwards. St. Marys is a striking church, rising high above the buuuilding around. This is especially true when seen across the river from the area of Shoreham Beach, and helps make it a painted church.
Old Shoreham was the original village and port until the building of New Shoream in 1100. From the discovery of Roman coins and pottery it is certain that there was a Roman settlement in the area. The church of St. Nicolas has existing Saxon work at the west end and the nearest estimate of the date of the original Saxon church from these remains is 'previous to 900.'
